The 34461A is the meter built to replace the 34401A, and Agilent's own migration note says it was designed by the same group, with many of the same engineers. It went on sale under the Agilent name before the November 2014 split, so you'll see both badges. The pitch was a drop-in swap. It answers the 34401A's SCPI commands (it'll even identify itself as an HP 34401A if you ask it to), keeps the same 6½ digits and 35 ppm basic accuracy, and adds a 4.3-inch color screen with histograms and trend charts, a 10,000-reading memory, and 100 µA and 10 A current ranges. USB and LAN are standard. GPIB is an option and RS-232 is gone, so check the rear panel if you need either. When Keysight discontinued the 34401A in December 2016, this is the model it named as the replacement.

Most problems on a meter this young come from how it was used, like a blown current fuse or an input damaged by an overload. GPIB is an option, so check the rear panel if your setup needs it.

We'd buy t0psale's 34461A titled 100% tested working at $1,438 delivered, inside the $1,275–1,625 band, with photos of it taking real readings. There are at least 148 for sale, nearly all from China resellers asking about $1,000–1,700 delivered, and many reuse watermarked photos (FUMISO, zecenke, Dearne) or copy titles across accounts, so the meter pictured may not be the one you get. It's still a current Keysight model, but every listing here is used, and the US option is rfpowertech's at $1,633 delivered. Ask for the self-test result, both the 3 A and 10 A inputs reading current, and the rear panel if you need GPIB, which is an option. Skip good-instruments' $3,130 ask at about 2.4 times the median.
