Two physicists, Lothar Rohde and Hermann Schwarz, set up a development lab in Munich in November 1933. They'd built their first test instrument the year before, to measure ceramic insulation at radio frequencies, and by 1937 they offered 24 different devices. The firm took the Rohde & Schwarz name in 1945 and is still privately owned, which sets it apart from the American makers here that changed hands several times. Its work spans test and measurement, broadcast gear and secure communications, so radio frequency is the house specialty. On the used market that means spectrum analyzers and signal generators, from the rack-sized FSE analyzers and SME generators to the FSH handheld analyzer.
