An RF power meter reads the actual power of a signal through a separate sensor head that plugs into it. The sensor sets the frequency and power range, so a meter without a sensor, or with one from the wrong family, is only half a kit. Sensors are the fragile part, and too much power damages them, which is easy to do near a transmitter. Used, ask which sensor comes with it and whether its calibration data is included. Then ask for a zero and a reading on a known source.
