A SourceMeter, or SMU, is a stable power source and a 6½-digit meter in one box. It can source voltage and measure current, or the reverse, in all four quadrants, which makes it the tool for testing diodes, transistors, LEDs, solar cells and batteries. A picoammeter measures very small currents, down where cables, leakage and noise start to matter. Used, ask for a self-test result and a check of each range, look at the terminals for damage, and confirm the interface you need is fitted.
