Brand
Tektronix grew out of Portland, Oregon, where Howard Vollum, Jack Murdock, Miles Tippery and accountant Glenn McDowell incorporated it in 1946. Vollum had already built a triggered oscilloscope, and the 511 that followed, made from 1947 to 1953, gave engineers a trace that held still on the screen. The company moved to Beaverton in 1959 and spent the next decades building plug-in lab scopes and portables like the 465 and 2465 families, then digital storage scopes like the TDS line. Danaher bought Tektronix in 2007, it went to Fortive in the 2016 spin-off, and it's now part of Ralliant, which Fortive spun off in 2025. Tek shipped full service manuals with schematics into the 1990s, which is why so many of its old scopes are still running.
