Type
A multimeter measures voltage, current and resistance. The bench kind adds more digits, more speed and a computer interface, and a 6½-digit bench meter resolves far finer steps than a 3½ or 4½-digit handheld. Used, start with the current inputs, since a meter that's been fed too much current usually shows it in blown fuses or scorched jacks. Look for a clean power-on self-test and a steady reading on a known voltage. If accuracy matters, favor a dated calibration certificate from a named lab. On handhelds, check the case, the rotary switch and the battery door.
