The 179 is the top model of Fluke's 170 series, the 175, 177 and 179, and Fluke's 170-series manual is dated May 2003. It's the everyday True-RMS meter of the line, with 6,000 counts, a fast bar graph, min/max/average recording, and a rating of CAT III 1000 V and CAT IV 600 V. Fluke's own comparison table shows what the 179 adds over the 177, a built-in thermometer, and it ships with the 80BK-A Type K probe to read from -40 to 400 °C. Some older listings call it a 4½-digit meter; Fluke calls it 3½ digits with 6,000 counts. Fluke still sells it with a limited lifetime warranty, and it warns that counterfeits of its tools are sold by third-party marketplace sellers, so look closely at the printing in the photos.
Options and accessories
Check the listing photos and the rear panel against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing option or probe should come off the price.
A current range that reads nothing is usually a blown fuse, from measuring voltage with a lead still in the A or mA jack. Fluke's manual gives a quick resistance test for both fuses. Fluke warns that counterfeit Fluke tools are sold online, so the printing on the case matters.

Buying guide
We'd buy the 179 titled tested with leads at $200 delivered, under the $210–290 band, and its photo shows it switched on and reading. There are at least 137 for sale, almost all from US sellers including plenty of pawn and resale shops, and the 179/EDA2 kits with grip probes ask $330–397. Look for the 80BK-A temperature probe in the photos, since it came in the box new, and compare the case printing with Fluke's own photos, because Fluke warns that fakes are sold online. Ask the seller to set the dial to ohms and connect V to A, then V to mA, with a lead, and a good fuse reads under 0.5 ohm on the 11 A side and under 12 ohms on the 440 mA side. Skip the 90%-feedback seller at $274.
