The 289 is Fluke's industrial logging handheld, and the one to buy if you want a meter that records while you're somewhere else. Fluke's 287/289 manual is dated June 2007, and the launch literature called the 289 the next generation of high-performance logging meter. Its 50,000-count reading sits on a 1/4 VGA graphic screen, so the meter can draw what it logged. Fluke calls that TrendCapture. Leave the 289 on a circuit, come back, and zoom into the trend to find the dropout. It stores up to 15,000 readings, runs about 200 hours on six AA cells in logging mode and adds a low-impedance voltage function. It's rated CAT III 1000 V and CAT IV 600 V. To move logs onto a PC you need Fluke's IR cable and FlukeView Forms, so check the listing for them.

Options and accessories
What should come with it
FVF-SC2 FlukeView Forms software with the IR cable (needed to download logs)
80BK Type K temperature probe (optional on the 289)
TL71 test leads and AC175 alligator clips (in the box new)
Check the listing photos and the rear panel against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing option or probe should come off the price.
What to check
The IR cable and FlukeView Forms software were sold separately, so a used 289 may come without them, and you can't download logs without them. As on any Fluke handheld, a dead current range usually means a blown fuse, and Fluke specifies its own 440 mA and 11 A parts.
01Screen: Ask for a photo of the screen powered on with the backlight lit. The graphic screen should be complete, with no missing lines or dark patches.
02Logging: Ask the seller to run a short log and photo the TrendCapture graph. A working 289 draws the logged readings as a trend you can zoom into.
03PC link: Check whether the FVF-SC2 cable and FlukeView Forms are in the listing. Without them you can view logs on the meter but not download them.
04Fuses: Ask whether the fuses are Fluke's 440 mA and 11 A 1000 V parts. A generic glass fuse in a 1000 V meter is a safety problem.
05Batteries: Ask for a photo of the open battery compartment. The six AA contacts should be clean, with no green corrosion.
06Calibration: Read what any calibration claim is based on. A dated certificate from a named lab, with data, means something, and a sticker or "cal'd" in the title proves little.
We'd buy the 289 with leads and clips from a US test-gear dealer at $365 delivered, the cheapest here and under the $410–600 band. There are at least 97 for sale, and the middle of the band is mostly China resellers at $474–555 delivered, one of them using another seller's photo, so ask any of them for a photo of the actual meter with its serial. Ask for the screen lit with no missing lines and for a short log drawn as a TrendCapture graph. You need Fluke's IR cable and FlukeView Forms to download logs, and only the $1,000 kit here titles them, about twice the $486 median, so budget for the cable separately on the others.

The lowest delivered 289 here at $365, with leads and clips as titled and a photo of it switched on, from a US test-gear dealer. No IR cable is titled, so add one if you want to download logs.
About $45 under the band with leads and clips, from a dealer that sells its broken meters separately as parts. Ask for a short log photographed as a TrendCapture graph.
The only 289 here titled with a cal date, "Cal Due Feb 27'", plus Type K thermocouples, at $608 delivered, just over the band. Ask for the certificate to see which lab did it and when.
