Keithley sold the 2001 alongside the 8½-digit 2002 as high-performance DMMs that did most of what far costlier lab meters did, and its Quick Reference Guide is dated 1992. Keithley made a point of true 7½-digit resolution from a 28-bit A/D converter, where rivals averaged readings to get there, and a single range that reads from 1 µV to 20 V without a range change. AC is unusually strong, with TRMS, average, peak and crest-factor modes, and Keithley claimed better than 0.1% accuracy down to 1 Hz. xdevs notes the reference is an ovenized LM399 and the case is half-rack width, so two fit side by side. Memory size is part of the model name, plain 2001, 2001/MEM1 or 2001/MEM2, so read the label. It's discontinued now.

Check the listing photos and the rear panel against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing option or probe should come off the price.
What to check
xdevs warns against powering up a long-stored 2001 before checking it, because aging electrolytic capacitors leak and cause more damage. Its repair log also covers failed JFETs in the input circuits and a failing DS1245Y memory chip that makes the meter hang after warm-up.
01Capacitors: Ask whether the electrolytic capacitors have been replaced, and by whom. A documented recap is a good sign on a meter this age.
02Warm-up: Ask the seller to leave it on for an hour, then press a few keys. It should still respond and read normally, with no lockup.
03Power-on: Ask for a photo of the display after power-on. It should reach a normal reading with no error message.
04Memory: Check the listing for MEM1 or MEM2. That tells you how many readings it can store.
05Scanner card: Ask whether a scanner card is fitted and which one. A 2001-SCAN or 2000-SCAN only matters if you need multi-channel work.
06Calibration: Ask for the last calibration certificate. A dated certificate from a named lab, with data, means something, and a sticker or "cal'd" in the title proves little.
07Packing: Ask how it will be packed. It should travel double-boxed with foam all round so the front panel and rear connectors aren't hit.
We'd buy the 2001 at $900 with free shipping from a US seller, whose photo shows it finishing power-on with its serial number and STD memory on screen. There are at least 76 for sale, and the $1,675–2,425 band is set by China resellers around $2,250 delivered, while US sellers here ask $900–1,300 for plain units and $1,679 for one titled NIST calibrated with data. xdevs warns against powering up a long-stored 2001 before checking it, because old electrolytic capacitors leak, so ask whether it's been recapped, and ask the seller to leave it on for an hour and then press a few keys, since a failing memory chip makes it hang after warm-up. Check the memory size on the power-on screen or label (STD, MEM1 or MEM2), and skip the $3,526 China unit, which asks nearly four times the cheapest US one with nothing extra in the title.

The lowest delivered 2001 at $900 with free shipping, and the photo shows it finishing power-on with its serial and STD memory. It isn't titled tested, so ask for a reading after an hour's warm-up.
About $775 under the band from a US seller, and the power-on photo shows it's alive with the standard memory. Ask whether the electrolytic capacitors have been replaced, since leaking ones are the big risk on a stored 2001.
Titled NIST calibrated with data, from a US test-equipment dealer, at $1,679 with free shipping, right at the bottom of the band. Ask for the certificate's date and check its serial matches the meter.
Keithley 2001 7.5 Digit Multimeter NIST Calibrated with Data
The only 2001 here titled calibrated with data, so it should need the least work before it's on your bench. Ask how it'll be packed, since it should travel double-boxed with foam all round.
