The 8506A is the thermal-RMS half of a pair of Fluke system meters, and the 8505A is its sibling. Fluke's 1990 catalog calls them its most advanced bench and system DMMs. Both read DC to 6½ digits, or 7½ on the 10 V range in averaging mode, using a Fluke-patented recirculating-remainder converter that keeps 6½ digits at up to 500 readings a second. What makes the 8506A special is AC. Instead of a calculating true-RMS chip it uses a fast thermal RMS sensor, specified from 10 Hz to 1 MHz with 120 ppm basic accuracy, which Fluke said approaches traditional thermal transfer measurement at DMM speed. It's modular, so what a unit can do depends on its boards: resistance, current and the computer interface were all options. Ask which ones are fitted before you buy.

Ask which option boards are fitted by number, since without -02A it can't measure resistance, and ask for a photo of the display after warm-up reading a known voltage. At about 10 kg it needs a double box with foam all round, so ask how it'll be packed.
