The 8842A is the top model of Fluke's 8840A bench family, a 5½-digit meter that Fluke's own manual sells on stability, citing thin-film resistor networks, a stable reference amplifier, closed-case calibration with no internal adjustments, and 0.003% basic DC accuracy for a year. It added 20 mV, 20 ohm and 200 mA ranges to the family. It was common enough in test racks that Keithley later gave its Model 2000 a command mode for the Fluke 8840 and 8842, so old programs would keep running. When you shop, read the options. GPIB was Option -05 and AC was Option -09, so a bare 8842A measures DC volts, ohms and DC current only. Look for -05 and -09 in the listing and ask the seller to confirm them.

xdevs documents an 8842A with a cracked hybrid resistor network and a broken display glass, both hard to fix, and notes that mismatched replacement parts from an earlier repair left the meter stuck reading overflow. It also flags the mains filter as prone to failure.

Buying guide
We'd buy the 8842A titled tested with Option -09 true-RMS AC at $580 delivered, because a bare 8842A reads DC only and can't measure AC at all. There are at least 13 for sale and most ask $310–625 delivered, but skip the $330 China listing, whose title and watermarked photos turn up under three seller names. Read the options before the price. Option -05 is GPIB and -09 is AC, and the two US dealer units titled with -09 ask $887–941 delivered, the dearer one calibrated with data. Ask for a photo of it on and reading with no error message, and check the rear line-voltage selector before the first power-on, especially on the unit from the UAE.
