Keithley pitched the Model 2000 as a fast, accurate 6½-digit DMM you could afford, built on the same A/D converter technology as its 7½-digit 2001 and 8½-digit 2002. Its manual is copyright 1994. It has 13 functions, with thermocouple temperature and a 300 kHz frequency counter built in, and both GPIB and RS-232 as standard. Keithley also gave it command modes for the Fluke 8840A and 8842A and its own 196 and 199, so it could drop into old test racks without new software. The rear option slot takes the 10-channel 2000-SCAN card, which turns it into a small scan-and-measure system. Keithley has since discontinued it and points owners to the DMM6500, which accepts 2000-series scan cards.

xdevs, which has repaired several, recommends replacing the electrolytic capacitors in any second-hand 2000 because leaking electrolyte damages the boards. It also documents dimming displays and a front/rear input switch whose contacts wear and cause jumpy readings.

Buying guide
We'd buy the 2000 titled tested and working from a US test-equipment dealer at $650 delivered for an easy first one, or the $388 China unit whose photo shows it reading 10 V next to a reference source if you're fine buying from overseas. There are at least 121 for sale, and most are China resellers asking about $350–500 delivered with watermarked photos that turn up under other sellers' names, so ask for a photo of the actual unit showing its serial and the power-on screen. xdevs recommends replacing the electrolytic capacitors in any second-hand 2000, so ask whether that's been done.
