Marconi Instruments' manual for the original 6960 RF power meter is dated January 1984. It reads in watts, dBm or dB relative on a four-digit LCD, with an analog meter for peaking adjustments and a microprocessor doing the corrections. You enter each sensor's calibration factor and linearity factor from its label, and AUTOCAL sets the gain against the built-in 1 mW, 50 MHz reference, traceable to the UK's National Physical Laboratory. The 6960B came later. Marconi's 1992 sensor manual says the 6960A and 6960B take the 6930-series high-power heads, which the original 6960 can't. The 6900-series heads cover 30 kHz to 40 GHz and -70 to +35 dBm between them, thermocouple types (6910, 6930) and diode types (6920) for the lowest levels. The meter is only half the instrument, so buy a 6960B with a sensor, its calibration chart and a cable.
Options and accessories
Check the listing photos and the rear panel against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing option or probe should come off the price.
Most trouble shows up in the sensor. The heads are static sensitive and their precision connectors wear, and Marconi's warranty didn't cover connector wear. A meter sold without a sensor and cable can't measure anything.

Buying guide
We'd buy the 6960B from sglabs at $570 delivered, because it's the only one titled with a sensor, a 6910 head, and a meter without a sensor and cable can't measure anything. There are at least 9 for sale, and the meter-only units from the US and Israel ask $194–578 delivered, while the $330–1,450 band is pulled up by two China listings near $1,640. Pick a listing with a sensor, or budget for a 6900-series head and cable on top of a bare meter, and ask for a photo after zero and AUTOCAL showing 1 mW on the reference. Several photos show Er 2, which is what it shows with no sensor connected, and Marconi shipped these set for 210–250 V, so check the rear selector before you plug one in. Skip the two China listings that share one watermarked photo at about $1,640.
