Marconi Instruments, the GEC test-equipment maker that settled in Stevenage, built the 2019A as the 1040 MHz partner to the 520 MHz 2018A, and their service manual dates from 1984. Both are synthesized AM/FM generators locked to a crystal reference, and the 2019A adds a frequency doubler to reach 1040 MHz with the same -127 to +13 dBm output range. You get AM, FM and phase modulation from six internal tones or an external source, 10 Hz steps up to 520 MHz, three LCD windows and a keypad. A reed relay protects the output against up to 50 W of reverse power, handy on a radio bench. GPIB was an option, and a second-function menu shows the total hours the generator has run. Marconi was sold to IFR in 1998, which is why later generators in this line carry the IFR name.

What to check
We couldn't find a well-documented common fault for the 2019A. Check the output level and the LCDs, since a unit that's had a transmitter keyed into it or a failing display shows up there first.
01Display: Ask for a photo of the front panel powered on. All three LCD windows should show complete digits.
02Frequency: Ask the seller to set 100 MHz and photograph a counter or analyzer reading it. The reading should match the setting closely.
03Output level: Ask for a reading of 0 dBm on a power meter or analyzer. It should land within about 1 dB.
04Run hours: Ask the seller to show the elapsed-time second function. Lower hours with a clean output is the better buy.
05GPIB: Check the rear panel in the photos for a GPIB connector if you need one. It was an option, so many units don't have it.
06Mains setting: Ask what mains range the selector switches are set to. It should match your supply before you power it on.
07Calibration: Check what backs a calibrated claim. A dated certificate from a named lab, with data, counts, while a sticker proves little.
We'd buy semiequip's 2019A at $775 delivered, because it's the only one shipping from inside the US, it comes from a test-equipment dealer, and its photo shows the displays lit. Only 4 are for sale, so the $700–1,025 band isn't a market read, and the other three ship from Italy, Israel and Kuwait, where they may well be set for 230 V. The two mains selector switches sit under a locked cover plate, so ask what range it's set to before you power it on, and ask for a photo of all three LCD windows with complete digits plus a 0 dBm reading on a power meter. We'd pass on the Kuwait seller at 97.4% feedback for a $1,150 delivered generator.
